India Issues NOTAM for K-4 SLBM Test Near Visakhapatnam, Strengthening Deterrence.

India has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for a potential missile test in the Bay of Bengal, suggesting a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) trial likely involving the K-4 variant from its Arihant-class nuclear submarines, with a striking radius of 3,500 kilometers. This demonstration signifies India’s commitment to refining its underwater nuclear deterrence capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific. While there is speculation about the K-5 SLBM—a more advanced missile with a range of 5,000 to 6,000 kilometers and possible Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs)—no official confirmation has been provided regarding the specifics of the test. The NOTAM, effective from December 1 to 4, underscores India’s strategic posture and readiness in response to regional threats, particularly from China, which has been observed deploying surveillance vessels in the Indian Ocean. This advancement in India’s undersea capabilities will enhance its second-strike nuclear deterrent, reinforcing the country’s defense strategy and contributing to the overarching goal of achieving self-reliance in defense technologies.
