IAF proposes expanding to 60 squadrons for enhanced China-Pak threat response.
Following a review of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is advocating for an expansion of its combat fleet from 42 to 55 or 60 squadrons to counter the two-front threats from China and Pakistan. This proposal emphasizes the need for increased support assets, particularly Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) and refuelers, to maintain operational effectiveness. Currently, the IAF’s combat strength stands at a low of 29-31 squadrons, necessitating a fiscal commitment estimated at $5-7 billion for additional support aircraft. The proposed expansion is critical for enhancing India’s operational capability, ensuring long-range surveillance, and conducting precision strikes, thereby reinforcing national security in a complex geopolitical environment.
