CDS General Chauhan inaugurates upgraded Car Nicobar runway, boosting India's defense capabilities in the region.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan inaugurated a major upgrade at the Car Nicobar Air Base, enhancing the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region. The resurfaced runway, measuring approximately 2.7 kilometers in length and 43 meters in width, will facilitate rapid deployment of front-line fighter aircraft and improve the IAF’s ability to conduct long-range operations and missile tests in the region, specifically over the busy Malacca Strait. Accompanying infrastructure improvements include expanded apron areas for efficient aircraft movement and a renovated taxi track, reinforcing India’s military presence and readiness in the eastern theatre. General Chauhan’s visit underscores the importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Command in India’s national security strategy, aligning with the government’s “Act East” policy to strengthen regional security. This modernization is poised to enhance India’s deterrence capabilities and situational awareness in the Indo-Pacific, addressing emerging security challenges and fortifying the country’s strategic posture.
