Geopolitics and Security Alliances

US warns that sanctions on Russian oil buyers may harm Russia's economy.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that further sanctions on countries buying Russian oil could lead to the collapse of Russia’s economy, emphasizing the need for strong coordination with European allies. The US has imposed a hefty 50% tariff on India’s Russian oil purchases, which President Trump criticized, claiming such purchases finance Russia’s war effort. India, however, has defended its actions, stating that its energy procurement is based on national interests and market needs. This situation reflects the complex geopolitical dynamics as India balances its energy security with international pressure amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine.
