Trump suggests NATO consider expelling Spain over defense spending issues.

U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that NATO should consider expelling Spain due to its insufficient military spending, which he views as a breach of alliance commitments. While NATO members agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has refused to commit to this target, citing its incompatibility with Spain’s welfare policies. In discussions with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Trump urged European leaders to pressure Spain to enhance its defense contributions. Spain, however, reaffirmed its commitment to NATO, emphasizing its alignment with alliance capabilities despite the ongoing tensions stemming from Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. This situation underscores the ongoing debate within NATO regarding defense spending and burden-sharing among member states.
