Russia proposes co-developing twin-seater Su-57 with India, aiming to revive FGFA program.

At the Dubai Airshow 2025, Russia’s Rostec proposed a collaborative development of a twin-seater variant of the Su-57 fighter aircraft, aiming to revitalize the previously shelved Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program with India. This offer arrives as India seeks to enhance its air force’s stealth capabilities amidst competitive global procurement, particularly for the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program. However, defense analysts argue that India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), with its superior avionics, stealth features, and indigenous development trajectory, would likely surpass the capabilities of the Su-57 by the time any deal materializes. Meanwhile, Russia is also promoting the Su-75 Checkmate, a fifth-generation light tactical fighter, offering full technology transfer and customization options tailored for Indian needs, positioning it as a potential low-cost alternative amidst geopolitical considerations. These developments underscore the ongoing strategic dynamics in India’s defense procurement landscape, with India balancing the need for advanced aircraft against the imperative of maintaining technological autonomy and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
