Romania secures 18 Dutch F-16s for NATO and pilot training.

On November 3, 2025, Romania announced the acquisition of 18 ex-Dutch F-16 fighter jets for a nominal price of one euro, alongside VAT charges totaling 21 million euros. This strategic deal enhances NATO’s eastern flank and reinforces Romania’s role in regional security, particularly in light of rising geopolitical tensions. The F-16s, stationed at the European F-16 Training Center, will be dedicated to pilot training for Romanian, NATO, and Ukrainian airmen, supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities. This acquisition highlights Romania’s growing importance as a defense and training hub in Eastern Europe, as it transitions toward modernizing its fleet and potentially moving towards the F-35 program, thereby contributing significantly to NATO’s operational readiness.
