Nepal introduces Rs 100 note with map including disputed territories.

Nepal’s central bank on November 27, 2025, introduced a new Rs 100 banknote featuring a revised national map that includes the disputed territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura—areas controlled by India but claimed by Nepal under the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. This move revives the 2020 border dispute when Nepal endorsed the updated map through its parliament under Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government. India has consistently rejected Nepal’s claims, describing the map revision as a “unilateral act” and “artificial enlargement” of territorial claims, maintaining that these regions belong within its borders. The Rs 100 note uniquely bears this map, along with icons like Mount Everest, Nepal’s national flower rhododendron, and the Ashoka Pillar. The issuance underscores Kathmandu’s intent to assert its territorial claim amid ongoing tensions with New Delhi and adds complexity to India-Nepal border relations across an over 1,850 km shared frontier spanning five Indian states.
