Jaishankar Defends India at UNGA, Supports Cyprus Settlement

At the UN General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar countered Turkish President Erdogan’s remarks regarding Kashmir, reaffirming India’s commitment to a resolution of the Cyprus dispute under UN frameworks. Jaishankar’s response highlighted Turkey’s double standards, as he pointed out Ankara’s military intervention in Cyprus while criticizing India’s internal matters. This diplomatic maneuver not only rebutted Erdogan’s claims but also reinforced India’s strategic alignment with European partners like Greece and Cyprus, both of whom oppose Turkish assertiveness. By linking the Kashmir issue with Cyprus, India demonstrated its commitment to international law and enhanced its geopolitical standing in a region increasingly wary of Turkey’s actions, thereby turning a potential provocation into an opportunity for strengthening diplomatic ties.
