Indonesian Defence Minister to Discuss BrahMos Deal in New Delhi.
Indonesian Defence Minister General (Ret.) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin is set to visit New Delhi from November 26-28 to advance discussions on the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal, which is valued at over USD 350 million. This visit marks a pivotal development in India’s defense export strategy and follows Indonesia’s acquisition of shore-based BrahMos regiments aimed at enhancing its maritime defense capabilities, particularly in the strategically significant Natuna Islands region. The discussions will encompass delivery timelines, site finalization for coastal batteries, and operator training for Indonesian personnel in India. Additionally, the meeting is expected to explore co-production and technology transfer opportunities, with Indonesia expressing interest in integrating Indian firms into its naval modernization efforts, including submarine and frigate acquisitions. The BrahMos deal not only symbolizes India’s growing influence as a defense supplier in Southeast Asia, following the Philippines’ earlier purchase, but also reflects Indonesia’s strategic intent to diversify its defense procurement sources amid increasing maritime challenges in the region. This collaboration aligns with India’s ambition to establish itself as a prominent player in the global arms market, particularly under its Make in India initiative.
