Geopolitics and Security Alliances

India's oil imports diversify due to changing geopolitical dynamics.

India’s oil import strategy has undergone significant transformation due to shifting geopolitical dynamics, particularly following the reimposition of U.S. sanctions on Iran in 2017. After a brief revival of energy ties with Iran post-2016, India sharply reduced its crude imports from the country by 91.8% by 2019-20, reflecting both sanctions pressure and a strategic pivot towards diversification. Currently, India sources its oil from a more varied portfolio, with notable increases from the United Arab Emirates and the United States, positioning itself to mitigate risks associated with reliance on a single supplier. This diversification not only enhances energy security but also aligns with India’s broader geopolitical interests in strengthening ties with key global players.
