India's Military Leadership Pushes for Integrated Theatre Commands
India’s top military leadership convened for the Combined Commanders Conference at Fort William, Kolkata, marking a pivotal moment in the push for Integrated Theatre Commands (ITCs). Prime Minister Modi and Defence Minister Singh endorsed the need for joint operations amidst concerns raised by the Indian Air Force regarding the potential dilution of its autonomy. Nonetheless, a consensus appears to be forming for the establishment of three theatre commands, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency against nuclear-armed adversaries. The proposed model, inspired by international doctrines, seeks to unify resources across land, air, and sea, but faces critical scrutiny over its feasibility, particularly given India’s unique security challenges and current military readiness. Successful implementation of ITCs could significantly bolster India’s defense strategy and readiness in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
