In a significant move to strengthen defense and security ties, India reaffirmed its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy during a recent two-day visit by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh to the Maldives. Engaging with key Maldivian officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Abdulla Khaleel and National Security Advisor Ibrahim Latheef, discussions encompassed military cooperation, capacity building, and emerging maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This visit marked the sixth Annual Defence Cooperation Dialogue, where both nations explored avenues to enhance bilateral ties and reinforced their commitment to shared peace and stability across the IOR. The dialogues also built upon the outcomes of prior meetings, such as the High-Level Core Group’s session in New Delhi, which focused on a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.
