India showcases Navy's success in piracy combat and maritime safety at UN.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, emphasized the Indian Navy’s crucial role in maritime safety at a recent Security Council session, highlighting its efforts to combat rising piracy in the Western Arabian Sea. Over the past two years, the Navy has deployed more than 35 ships, conducted over 1,000 boarding operations, and responded to over 35 distress incidents, successfully saving 520 lives and escorting 367 merchant vessels carrying over 14.7 million metric tonnes of cargo valued at $6.3 billion. The discussions underscored the escalating threats to global shipping routes, including missile attacks from Houthi forces and piracy near Somalia, which pose significant risks to international commerce and the safety of seafarers. Harish also noted the importance of the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) for real-time intelligence sharing and called attention to India’s Sagar Mein Samman initiative under the Maritime India Vision 2030, promoting gender inclusivity in the maritime sector. This commitment to enhancing maritime security and cooperation reflects India’s broader vision of mutual and holistic advancement for security and growth across regions.
