India ranks third in 2025 Asia Power Index, behind US and China.
India has achieved a significant milestone by securing third place in the Lowy Institute’s Asia Power Index 2025, just behind the United States and China. With an overall score of 40 out of 100, India is now classified as a “major power,” a status it reached through a combination of robust economic growth and enhanced military capabilities, notably highlighted by Operation Sindoor, which provided critical combat experience and improved perceptions of India’s defense readiness. The report indicates that India has surpassed China as the second-most attractive destination for foreign investment, driven by global supply-chain diversification. However, challenges remain, particularly in translating increased military capabilities and economic growth into geopolitical influence, as evidenced by declines in defense network scores and limited diplomatic engagement improvements. Overall, India’s ascendance as a major power reflects a transformative shift in the regional balance, underscoring its potential to shape Asia’s geopolitical landscape while navigating challenges posed by established superpowers.
