India-Canada uranium deal boosts bilateral ties and nuclear cooperation.
India and Canada are reportedly close to finalizing a significant uranium export agreement valued at approximately $2.8 billion, which would enhance civil nuclear cooperation between the two nations over a ten-year period, with uranium supplied by Cameco Corporation. This deal was a focal point during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, where they also agreed to restart negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at doubling bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. In addition to this, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs addressed Bangladesh’s extradition request concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, emphasizing India’s commitment to the welfare of the Bangladeshi populace. These developments underscore India’s strategic efforts to strengthen its international partnerships, particularly in energy security and economic collaboration, amid a complex geopolitical landscape.
