India calls for urgent UNSC reforms to address modern global challenges.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, has called for urgent reforms to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during an Open Debate on “Leadership for Peace” in New York, emphasizing that the Council’s current structure is outdated and ill-equipped to tackle contemporary global challenges. He highlighted the need for the Intergovernmental Negotiations framework to evolve into timely, text-based discussions to enhance representation, particularly for underrepresented regions. Parvathaneni’s remarks align with India’s broader push for a more inclusive and effective UNSC, coinciding with its growing global stature as the world’s most populous country and a major contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts. This strategic advocacy reflects India’s commitment to multilateralism and could significantly influence the UN’s reform trajectory amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
