India and US sign 10-year defense pact to enhance military ties.
On October 31, 2023, India and the United States signed a landmark 10-year defense framework agreement in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). This significant pact, inked by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, aims to deepen military cooperation, enhance intelligence sharing, facilitate technology transfer, and promote joint training exercises, thereby reinforcing bilateral defense ties that have reached unprecedented levels. The agreement replaces the previous 2015 defense framework and the 2023 Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap, establishing a comprehensive strategy for defense trade, co-development, and military interoperability over the next decade. With the Indo-Pacific region becoming increasingly strategic amid China’s assertiveness, the framework is seen as a cornerstone for regional stability, emphasizing a free, open, and rules-based maritime order. Singh hailed this development as a new chapter in India-US relations, further buttressing the strategic convergence between the two nations. Concurrently, India continues its defense modernization efforts, including plans to enhance its aerial capabilities with the acquisition of advanced air-to-air missiles for Rafale jets and an emphasis on indigenous defense production to ensure self-reliance. This ongoing commitment reflects India’s broader defense strategy, which prioritizes operational readiness and regional deterrence, aligning with its strategic partnerships, particularly with the US. The agreement and India’s modernization initiatives underscore the significance of building resilient defense capabilities in response to evolving geopolitical dynamics and emerging threats in the region, thereby enhancing India’s role as a key player in maintaining security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
