Geopolitics and Security Alliances

India and Japan must enhance military tech collaboration.

India and Japan are aiming to enhance military technology collaboration, yet progress has been slow, with only one successful project—a naval communication system—despite India’s urgent need for advanced technologies. Japan’s strict regulations on defense technology transfer and past failed projects, such as submarine and seaplane collaborations, have hindered deeper cooperation. Prime Minister Modi’s recent discussions emphasized future joint production, particularly in aero-engine technology, essential for India’s defense aspirations. While Japan has made strides in easing some restrictions, the need for a balanced and robust defense partnership remains critical to address regional security challenges, particularly in light of China’s growing influence.
