Gen Dwivedi stresses combat readiness amid a fracturing multipolar world with 50 ongoing conflicts.
Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the need for the Indian military to transform decisively amidst over 50 ongoing global conflicts, as he inaugurated the Chanakya Defence Dialogue in Delhi. He described the current multipolar world as increasingly fractured, prompting a shift towards national security and deterrence. Gen Dwivedi outlined a “Decade of Transformation” from 2023 to 2032, segmented into three phases to enhance the Army’s preparedness for multi-domain operations encompassing land, air, cyber, and space. Central to this transformation are four “springboards”: self-reliance via indigenisation, accelerated innovation in advanced technologies, adaptation to evolving warfare, and military-civil fusion to strengthen resilience and reduce foreign dependencies. The Army Chief referenced Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Reforms” to underscore the operational impacts of these initiatives, citing Operation Sindoor as a successful example. The overarching aim is to align military capabilities with India’s national security imperatives and developmental aspirations, working towards a “Sashakt, Surakshit, and Viksit Bharat” (Empowered, Secure, and Developed India). President Droupadi Murmu’s presence at the dialogue highlighted the significance of collaborative military reforms in shaping India’s defense posture.
