ESA's €1.35 billion initiative enhances Europe's space security and autonomy.

On November 27, 2025, the European Space Agency (ESA) Council of Ministers approved a €1.35 billion space security initiative called European Resilience from Space (ERS), aimed at enhancing Europe’s autonomy in space through dual-use technologies. This historic move marks a strategic departure from ESA’s traditional civil focus, driven by increasing threats to European space assets, particularly from geopolitical tensions involving Russia and concerns over U.S. military space reliability. The initiative is part of a broader €22.1 billion budget for 2025-2027, reflecting Europe’s commitment to technological sovereignty and secure satellite communications. This development underscores a growing emphasis on space defense capabilities while maintaining alignment with international norms for peaceful space utilization and the protection of crucial orbital infrastructure.
