Geopolitics and Security Alliances

Allies of Ukraine oppose US peace plan viewed as favoring Russia.

Leaders from various nations, including Germany, France, and the U.K., have expressed significant reservations about a U.S. peace proposal for Ukraine that reportedly calls for territorial concessions and limitations on Ukraine’s military. This 28-point plan, which has been met with skepticism by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his allies, was discussed during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, where European leaders emphasized the need for robust guarantees for Ukrainian sovereignty and security. They reiterated that any negotiation process must include Ukraine’s input, reflecting a unified stance against pressure from the U.S. President Donald Trump, who hinted that the proposal was not final and set a deadline for Ukraine’s response. The ongoing conflict, approaching its fifth year, has seen Ukraine facing immense challenges on the battlefield and increasing internal political pressure, heightening the urgency for a resolution that respects its sovereignty while ensuring sustained support from Western allies.
