Unified IAF Preferred Over Theater Commands for Operational Efficiency
The Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief’s rejection of a fragmented Theater Command structure has sparked significant discourse about India’s military organization. Centralizing the IAF is argued to enhance operational flexibility, avoid asset duplication, and facilitate rapid response to threats, particularly along the borders with Pakistan and China. Rather than adopting Theater Commands, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) should focus on rationalizing existing Regional Commands to improve coordination and readiness. This approach aligns with India’s geographical realities and security needs, ensuring that the IAF remains a lean, agile, and unified force capable of addressing diverse threats efficiently.
