Sweden to increase military spending to 2.8% of GDP by 2026

The Swedish government plans to increase military spending to 2.8% of GDP by 2026, reflecting a significant rise in defense budget by 26.6 billion crowns ($2.87 billion) as part of a broader strategy to enhance its armed forces. This increase follows a historical trend, with a total rise of 100 billion kronor since 2022, as Sweden aims to meet NATO’s target of 3.5% of GDP. The funds will be allocated for new military equipment, including air defense systems and combat ships, as well as to raise salaries for military personnel. This strategic shift underscores Sweden’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities amid evolving geopolitical tensions.
