India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has underscored the critical need for self-reliance in the defense sector, emphasizing the importance of sovereign capabilities amid escalating global tensions and conflicts. He announced the ambitious Sudarshan Chakra air defense system, aiming to provide aerial security to vital installations within the next decade, while marking a pivotal shift in India’s defense strategy towards indigenization. The minister highlighted the development of a powerful indigenous jet engine, alongside successful integrated air defense weapon system tests, reinforcing India’s growing capabilities. Singh stated that self-reliance is not protectionism but a necessity for national sovereignty, especially as many developed nations impose protectionist measures. India has transitioned from being a defense importer to a burgeoning exporter, with defense exports projected to rise significantly, reflecting the collaborative efforts of public and private sectors. He pointed to the historic Operation Sindoor as a testament to the effectiveness of indigenous technology in modern warfare and praised recent strides in naval capabilities with the commissioning of advanced stealth frigates. Singh also emphasized the transformative impact of policy reforms, such as the creation of Defense Industrial Corridors and the significant increase in the FDI limit, which have catalyzed innovation and economic growth in the defense sector. Ultimately, he positioned Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) as a roadmap for securing India’s strategic autonomy and contributing positively to global peace and stability, asserting that a self-reliant India will emerge stronger against international pressures.
