Zorawar light tanks to feature indigenous 800HP engine, reducing foreign dependency.

India is advancing its defence capabilities by equipping future batches of the Zorawar light tank with an indigenous 800 horsepower engine and transmission, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. This initiative follows operational challenges faced during the 2020 border standoffs with China, where heavier tanks proved inadequate in high-altitude terrains. The Zorawar, developed by DRDO and Larsen & Toubro, will initially deploy 54 units with a Cummins engine for immediate needs, while subsequent orders will integrate the new engine designed for enhanced performance in extreme conditions. This strategic move not only strengthens India’s armoured vehicle self-sufficiency but also positions the Zorawar as a competitive asset against adversaries, reflecting a significant step towards indigenisation in defence technology.
