US Approves $93 Million Arms Sale of Excalibur Projectiles to India
The United States government has approved a significant $93 million arms sale to India that includes 216 M982A1 Excalibur precision-guided artillery rounds valued at $47.1 million alongside 100 sets of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system worth $45.7 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) officially notified the US Congress of this Foreign Military Sale on November 19, 2025. The deal encompasses not only the weapons but also related equipment such as 25 lightweight command launch units for the Javelins, fire control components, training, missile simulation rounds, spare parts, and lifecycle support. This procurement aims to significantly enhance India’s precision strike capabilities and anti-armour defenses, particularly valuable in the context of evolving security dynamics along India’s northern borders with China and Pakistan. The Excalibur rounds are GPS-guided to ensure high accuracy and extended range, improving first-strike effectiveness while reducing collateral damage. The Javelin system, produced jointly by Raytheon Technologies and Lockheed Martin, offers a fire-and-forget capability for tackling modern armored threats in diverse terrains. US officials emphasized that these sales align with strengthening the US-India strategic partnership, supporting India as a Major Defense Partner, without altering the basic military balance in the region. This deal follows closely on the heels of a 10-year US-India defence cooperation framework announced in late October 2025, signaling deepening defense ties amid growing geopolitical shifts in the Indo-Pacific. Delivery schedules and further support activities are ongoing.
