Tejas Orders Expected to Exceed 220 Amid IAF's Indigenous Focus

Dr. Kota Harinarayana, the chief designer of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, expressed confidence that orders for the Tejas Mk1A will exceed 220 units, reflecting India’s commitment to aerospace self-reliance. With recent approvals for 97 additional jets, including trainer versions, HAL’s order book has reached Rs 2.7 lakh crore, prompting a significant shift in the Indian Air Force’s fleet composition. Harinarayana anticipates that this surge will not only meet the IAF’s 42-squadron requirement but also position India as a potential exporter, rivaling global competitors. The initiative emphasizes indigenous manufacturing, bolstering the economy by supporting over 500 MSMEs while enhancing the IAF’s operational capabilities amidst legacy fleet depletions.
