Tejas MkII Program Accelerates with Second Prototype by 2026

India’s Tejas MkII program is gaining momentum, with the second prototype assembly set to begin by late 2026, following the rollout of the first prototype in March 2026. The program includes a total of four prototypes, two for flight trials and two for weapons trials, aiming for operational clearance by 2031. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has expedited the development, agreeing to fast-track production once the aircraft demonstrates key weapon capabilities. HAL’s production strategy includes starting limited serial production before 2030 to maintain workflow, with a goal of producing up to 24 jets annually by 2035. This advancement is significant as it strengthens India’s domestic defense capabilities and enhances the IAF’s combat readiness in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
