Tejas Mk1A to Feature Israeli and Indigenous Uttam Radars

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that the first batch of 83 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets will be equipped with the Israeli ELM-2052 AESA radar to ensure timely delivery, while the subsequent 97 jets will feature the indigenous Uttam AESA radar developed by DRDO. The ELM-2052 enhances combat capabilities with advanced tracking and targeting, whereas the Uttam radar, with a higher TRM count, signifies India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense technology. This strategic transition reflects a balanced approach to leveraging proven systems while phasing in indigenous innovations, ultimately strengthening India’s defense ecosystem and reducing reliance on foreign technology.
