South Korea's KSS-III Batch-II Submarine Boosts Regional Deterrence

On October 22, 2025, South Korea launched the ROKS Jang Yeong-sil, the first of its advanced KSS-III Batch-II submarines, at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard. This 3,600-ton diesel-electric submarine features cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries, a ten-cell vertical launch system, and improved sonar, enhancing its operational capabilities against regional threats, particularly from North Korea. Scheduled for commissioning in 2027, the Jang Yeong-sil signifies a major advancement in South Korea’s naval technology and its aim to maintain maritime superiority. This development underscores the ongoing efforts of nations in the region to bolster their defense capabilities in response to evolving security challenges, reinforcing the importance of strategic deterrence and maritime security in the Korean Peninsula.
