Safran confirms complete tech transfer for India's fifth-gen fighter engine development.
In a landmark boost to India’s defense self-reliance, French aerospace giant Safran confirmed on November 26, 2025, a complete technology transfer—including critical hot-section components—for co-developing a 120-140 kN engine powering the indigenous fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The agreement, announced by Safran CEO Olivier Andriès during events in New Delhi, partners with DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) in Bengaluru under a $7 billion joint venture, granting India full intellectual property rights on compressors, turbines, and single-crystal blade technology. This unprecedented collaboration, backed by the French government, overcomes past hurdles like the Kaveri engine and involves private firms such as Tata, L&T, and Adani for manufacturing, with prototypes targeted by 2028 and production by the early 2030s. The move elevates India’s strategic aerospace prowess amid global partnerships.
