Russia Proposes M-90FR Turbines for Indian Navy Warships

Russia has proposed supplying the UEC/Saturn M-90FR marine gas turbine engine to India, aimed at replacing Ukrainian-made engines on Russian-designed warships in the Indian Navy, a move driven by ongoing supply chain disruptions due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This partnership not only enhances India’s naval capabilities but also aligns with its Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, allowing for local manufacturing of the engine. The M-90FR offers improved efficiency and reliability, ensuring compatibility with existing Russian platforms. As India aims to expand its naval fleet to 175 warships by 2035, this collaboration strengthens its strategic posture in the Indian Ocean region while reducing dependency on foreign sources.
