Royal Navy accelerates autonomous mine-hunting capabilities for enhanced maritime operations.

The Royal Navy’s Mine Hunting Capability (MHC) programme aims to transition its mine countermeasures operations to autonomous systems by 2033, enhancing operational safety and efficiency. This initiative includes the deployment of unmanned surface vessels (USVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and advanced command centres, with a focus on modular and scalable solutions. The programme is executed in blocks, with significant developments expected by 2025-2026, reflecting a broader trend in global navies towards autonomy, AI integration, and enhanced maritime capabilities. This strategic shift is particularly relevant for nations like India, which are concurrently advancing their own indigenous underwater robotic capabilities to strengthen naval effectiveness and strategic autonomy.
