Raipur's Special Blasts Limited to produce 155mm shells in two years, enhancing artillery capabilities.
Raipur-based Special Blasts Limited (SBL) is set to significantly enhance India’s artillery capabilities by producing 155mm shells domestically within the next two years. Currently scaling up its military-grade explosive production from 3,000 to 8,000 metric tonnes per annum with a capital investment of ₹500 crore, SBL plans to manufacture fully integrated ammunition, including 155mm shells compatible with Bofors-like howitzers. This move addresses India’s critical ammunition supply gaps highlighted during recent border tensions and Operation Sindoor. The initiative aligns with the national Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision to promote self-reliance in defense manufacturing, reducing dependence on imports. SBL’s expanded capacity will make it one of the largest private-sector producers of explosives and ammunition in India. The government’s recent policy reforms now enable faster private sector participation in manufacturing medium-caliber artillery shells, further strengthening India’s defense industrial base amid increasing geopolitical challenges, particularly along northern borders. The 155mm shell production is expected to be operational by late 2027, reinforcing India’s artillery firepower and strategic autonomy.
