Rafale Deal: First 18 Fighters to Arrive Sooner from France

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to finalize a record $23.8 billion deal for 114 Rafale fighter jets, with the initial 18 aircraft to be delivered off-the-shelf from France in a expedited timeline, enhancing IAF’s capabilities amid reduced squadron strength. This direct government-to-government procurement circumvents delays and ensures that the aircraft arrive fully equipped for immediate operational deployment, including advanced armaments and Indian upgrades. The deal supports indigenization efforts with plans for local assembly and technology transfer, aiming for 60% indigenous content in future batches. The strategic collaboration bolsters IAF’s strength, particularly in light of evolving threats from China and Pakistan, while establishing strong Indo-French defense ties.
