Poland chooses Saab A26 for strategic submarine upgrade amid regional threats.
Poland has officially selected Sweden’s Saab A26 submarine design to modernize its naval fleet under the “Orka” program, aimed at replacing aging Soviet-era Kilo-class submarines with three advanced vessels tailored for Baltic Sea operations, with deliveries expected to commence by 2030. This multi-billion-dollar procurement is strategic in enhancing Poland’s underwater deterrence amid rising regional threats, particularly from Russia, and supports the broader military modernization efforts aligned with NATO interoperability. The agreement will include technology transfer and industrial partnerships with Poland’s state-owned PGZ defense group, reflecting a commitment to bolster the national defense industry while utilizing EU loan programs for financing. The first submarine will replace the outdated ORP Orzeł, significantly enhancing Poland’s maritime security in a geopolitically tense Eastern Europe.
