PM Modi Unveils Plan to Open Nuclear Sector to Private Investment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a landmark reform to open India’s nuclear sector to private players, ending a 60-year government monopoly under the Atomic Energy Act of 1962. The forthcoming Atomic Energy Bill, 2025, will facilitate private participation in nuclear power generation, including the development of small modular reactors and advanced technologies, thereby enhancing energy security and fostering innovation. This initiative aims to attract investments, accelerate nuclear power capacity to meet India’s growing energy demands, and position India as a leader in global nuclear advancements. By mirroring successful reforms in the space sector, the government envisions a transformative shift towards market liberalization, promoting self-reliance and advancing clean energy objectives in line with India’s 2047 independence centenary goals.
