Philippines seeks additional BrahMos missile systems to bolster defense against China.

The Philippines has successfully unveiled its first operational BrahMos shore-based missile battery, enhancing its maritime deterrence capabilities amid increasing Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea. This deployment, featuring four truck-mounted launchers armed with eight BrahMos Block I supersonic cruise missiles, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen national defense under the Horizon 2 modernization program. The BrahMos system, characterized by its impressive supersonic speed and precision, is designed to target naval vessels, thus significantly raising the cost of potential incursions by Chinese forces. With an additional order for nine more batteries currently under negotiation, the Philippines aims to establish comprehensive coastal missile coverage, reflecting its commitment to securing maritime sovereignty. This development not only underscores India’s growing role as a reliable defense partner in Southeast Asia but also symbolizes a shift in regional security dynamics, where smaller nations are increasingly seeking to counterbalance larger powers through strategic alliances and advanced military technology.
