MoD Set to Approve 300 MR-SAM Missiles for Navy and IAF

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is poised to approve a significant procurement of over 300 Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MR-SAM) for the Indian Navy and Air Force, with the deal valued at more than Rs 10,000 crore as of October 21, 2025. Manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) under the ‘Buy Indian’ category, this move considerably boosts India’s air defense capabilities, extending the missile’s range up to 100 km through recent upgrades. The MR-SAM system, a product of Indo-Israeli collaboration with over 85% indigenization, aligns strongly with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Previously contracted for Rs 2,960 crore in January 2025 for Navy supply, the system is now being upgraded and expanded for enhanced deployment across naval and air platforms. Featuring advanced propulsion and high maneuverability, MR-SAM effectively counters aerial threats including aircraft, drones, and supersonic missiles. This procurement not only strengthens India’s strategic defense posture across its borders and maritime zones but also stimulates domestic defense manufacturing, supporting MSMEs and generating substantial employment. It marks a critical milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense technology and regional security assurance.
