MoD plans to acquire 1,000 Guided Pinaka rockets for enhanced firepower.

The Indian Ministry of Defence is poised to approve the acquisition of approximately 1,000 Guided Pinaka rockets, each capable of striking targets up to 90 kilometers away, with the Defence Acquisition Council set to review the proposal in late November 2025. This indigenous precision-guided rocket, developed by DRDO, significantly enhances the Indian Army’s artillery capabilities by combining GPS/INS navigation with rapid salvo firing from the advanced Pinaka launcher system. This move furthers India’s strategic objectives against persistent threats along its borders with China and Pakistan, supporting precision strikes with reduced troop exposure. The Guided Pinaka system, mounted on highly mobile 8×8 vehicles, can fire 12 rockets within 44 seconds, ensuring quick and accurate suppression of enemy positions. Induction is expected by mid-2027 as part of a broader artillery modernization program aiming to field 22 Pinaka regiments by 2030. The system’s success and potential have attracted international interest, notably from France, reflecting India’s growing stature in defense technology innovation and self-reliance under the Make-in-India initiative. This procurement marks a key step in strengthening India’s firepower with cutting-edge indigenous artillery solutions.
