MoD aims for 2026 Dry Kaveri certification to boost Ghatak UCAV project.
The Ministry of Defence has set a firm 2026 deadline for the Gas Turbine Research Establishment to certify the indigenous Dry Kaveri engine, crucial for the Ghatak UCAV project. This initiative aims to establish a self-reliant defense manufacturing ecosystem, avoiding foreign engine reliance and ensuring timely project execution. The Dry Kaveri, capable of 49 kN thrust, will undergo high-altitude trials in Russia, with the first Ghatak prototype anticipated by late 2029 or early 2030, followed by maiden flights in 2030 or early 2031. This strategic move, including partnerships with private firms like Larsen & Toubro, emphasizes India’s commitment to advancing its autonomous aviation capabilities while mitigating historical delays in defense projects.
