Leonardo's Black Shark torpedo emerges in Indian Navy's submarine competition.

Leonardo’s Black Shark torpedo is a strong contender in the Indian Navy’s submarine arsenal race, with an initial requirement of 48 units, leading towards a larger indigenous production plan exceeding 200 units under the Make in India initiative. Featuring advanced electric propulsion, a range of approximately 50 kilometers, and integration compatibility with the Kalvari-class submarines’ Subtics combat management system, the proposal highlights deep industrial cooperation and technology transfer with Indian firms. The competition primarily faces France’s Naval Group, while Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has withdrawn, citing high costs and integration issues. Securing this contract could significantly deepen Indo-Italian defense collaboration and position India as a regional manufacturing hub for advanced naval capabilities.
