India's Bharat Small Reactors Gain Advantage from UK Trade Deal
India’s Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs) are gaining a competitive edge in the global nuclear market following a UK-India trade deal that removes import duties on Indian reactors, making them over 50% cheaper than South Korea’s small modular reactors. This strategic move aligns with India’s National Nuclear Energy Mission, aiming for 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. While BSRs promise cost efficiency and flexibility for decarbonizing industries, challenges such as regulatory hurdles and infrastructure limitations remain. With plans to deploy 40-50 BSRs by 2032 and operationalize five by 2033, India is poised to capture a significant share of the anticipated $295 billion SMR market by 2040.
