India's $946M deal for MH-60R helicopters boosts navy and US ties.

The Indian Navy is set to operationalise its first squadron of MH-60R Romeo helicopters, with a formal commissioning ceremony scheduled for December 2025 at INS Hansa in Goa. This follows a $2.4 billion Foreign Military Sales deal signed in February 2020, with 15 of the 24 helicopters already delivered. The MH-60R, regarded as the most advanced maritime helicopter globally, significantly enhances India’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities amid growing concerns over China’s expanding submarine fleet in the Indian Ocean Region. The helicopters are equipped with advanced technologies, including multimode radar and a robust weapons suite, and are being customised for Indian operational needs with indigenous systems. This development not only strengthens the Indian Navy’s maritime security posture but also enhances US-India defence collaboration in the Indo-Pacific, contributing to regional stability and self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
