Indian Navy's ₹70,000 Crore Project 17B to Build Seven Frigates

The Indian Navy’s Project 17B, a significant initiative valued at ₹70,000 crore (~$8 billion), plans to construct seven advanced stealth frigates to enhance maritime capabilities. The Request for Proposal (RFP) is anticipated by late 2025, with construction likely split between two leading Indian shipyards, fostering competition and efficiency. This project follows the successful Project 17A and underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. By integrating indigenous technologies, Project 17B aims to strengthen India’s presence in the Indian Ocean Region amidst growing geopolitical uncertainties, showcasing proactive defense modernization efforts.
