In a significant advancement for India’s maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy is set to issue a tender valued at approximately Rs 80,000 crore for the construction of four advanced Landing Platform Docks (LPDs). This initiative, aimed at bolstering India’s amphibious warfare infrastructure, comes as the Defence Ministry is expected to review the proposal in a high-level meeting soon. Major Indian shipbuilding firms, including Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Cochin Shipyard, Hindustan Shipyard, and Larsen & Toubro, are expected to compete for the order, potentially collaborating with international partners like Navantia, Naval Group, and Fincantieri for design and technological integration. The LPDs will not only enhance troop and vehicle transport capabilities but also function as command and control centres, integrating advanced systems such as fixed-wing naval drones and comprehensive air defense mechanisms. This project reflects a strategic response to evolving regional security dynamics, particularly in light of China’s growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean. By prioritizing indigenous shipbuilding under the government’s Make in India initiative, the Navy aims to create a self-reliant defense ecosystem that enhances operational readiness and supports joint operations with the Army and Air Force.
