Indian Navy to Develop 4.55 MW Electric Motor for Submarines

The Indian Navy is set to indigenously develop a 4.55 MW electrical propulsion motor for future submarines as part of Project-76, which aims to create a new class of 2,500-ton indigenous submarines. This highly efficient permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) will enhance the stealth and endurance of these underwater platforms while reducing reliance on imported technologies. The final specifications will be established by 2025, emphasizing India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense capabilities and advanced naval warfare. This initiative not only strengthens India’s indigenous defense industry but also aligns with broader strategic goals of enhancing maritime security.
