Indian Navy to Acquire 4 Indigenous Amphibious Warships to Counter China

The Indian Navy is poised to significantly enhance its maritime capabilities with the forthcoming acquisition of four indigenous Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) as part of its ambitious Multi-Role Support Vessel (MRSV) program, with an estimated budget of 80,000 crore (approximately USD 10 billion). This strategic initiative, anticipated to be announced shortly, underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its amphibious warfare capabilities in response to the evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region, particularly from China. The vessels, which will be constructed by prominent Indian shipbuilders in collaboration with international defense firms, are designed to function as versatile operational platforms capable of deploying troops, vehicles, and advanced naval drones for surveillance and combat purposes. With a focus on indigenous production aligned with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, this project not only aims to bolster India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem but also seeks to improve joint operational capabilities with the Indian Army and Air Force. The broader significance lies in enhancing India’s strategic autonomy and maritime power, positioning it as a formidable player on the global naval stage while addressing operational gaps identified in audits and assessments of current capabilities.
