Indian Navy Shifts to Indigenous LRMFR, Enhancing Warship Surveillance.
The Indian Navy is transitioning from the Israeli EL/M-2248 MF-STAR radar to an indigenous Long-Range Multi-Function Radar (LRMFR), developed by DRDO and private partners. This 6-meter S-band radar promises superior capabilities in detecting ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as stealth aircraft, potentially outperforming U.S. systems like the AN/SPY-6. While legacy ships will retain MF-STAR for now, future projects like the Project 18 destroyers will incorporate LRMFR, aligning with India’s defense indigenization goals amid geopolitical tensions. The move signifies a critical shift towards self-reliance in defense technology, enhancing the Navy’s operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region and providing a credible deterrent against regional adversaries.
